We've been watching message templates across our WhatsApp Business customers for six months. Here's what works.
1. Send the PDF, not a sales pitch
The highest-engagement template across every industry is the bare invoice template: PDF attached, amount in the body, UPI link. No greeting, no upsell, no ‘visit our store soon’. Customers want the document and the payment link — everything else is friction.
2. One CTA per message
Templates with two buttons (‘Pay now’ AND ‘Track order’) underperform single-CTA versions by 30%+. Pick the one action you want them to take and ask for that alone.
3. Templates that read like a human, not a brand
“Your order is ready, will reach you by 3 PM today” outperforms “Dear valued customer, your order with order ID #INV-20418 has been dispatched and is expected to arrive within the next 24-48 hours”. Every. Single. Time.
4. Send at the right hour
10 AM and 7 PM are both 50% better than 2 PM. Festival broadcasts sent before 9 AM also outperform afternoon sends. We added a scheduling layer to TechAge after seeing this data — you can now defer non-urgent templates to peak open hours.
5. Reminders escalate gently
For payment reminders, the sequence that works is: friendly nudge at T-3 days, factual reminder at T+1, then nothing for a week, then a slightly firmer follow-up with the UPI link. Pestering every 48 hours kills the channel.
And the meta-point
You can broadcast to thousands of opted-in customers for the cost of a few hundred rupees a day. The temptation is to send more, more often, with more in each message. The data says: send fewer, send shorter, and trust the channel.
